The Monday Club meet on a weekly basis, during term time, for exercise and self help, to encourage both active and passive gentle exercises, thus stretching muscles that are not being used adequately.
We also stimulate mental processes using the memory. We encourage a positive approach to the disease process by creating a non-threatening environment in which members can share common problems and discover together ways to overcome these. We cater for both men and women and are supported by the local branch of the MS Society.
We have a fitness instructor, with an extensive knowledge of the disease, who plans the exercise programme, suitable to suit individual requirements. She works in conjunction with the Community Physiotherapist, who visits about every 2 months or more frequently if there are specific needs to be addressed.
Monday morning starts with a time of social interaction, followed by some warming up exercises. For those who are able, parallel bars are available for more comprehensive exercise. Those who remain seated during this time, have small pieces of equipment to strengthen weak arms and hands. Part way through the morning there is a refreshment break, a drinks machine being available in the lobby. For those who are wheelchair bound, we can assist people to get up and walk between the parallel bars, something greatly appreciated by those unable to walk unaided. Depending on individual ability, some can do floor exercises and this is followed by a time of relaxation, either on the floor or in chairs. Mats are provided for floor exercises. During the morning, we throw soft balls etc. to help in co-ordination of eyes and hands. Memory games are also played to cultivate improved mental processes. We may change the order of the activities to stimulate the atmosphere of the group. All members must be paid up members of the MS Society for insurance purposes.
